Trading Green for a Pickleball Court: Enhance Your Backyard Experience

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

Hello fellow Pickleball enthusiasts!

If you're anything like me, you're constantly on the lookout for ways to sneak in an extra game or two of Pickleball. One solution that might have crossed your mind: Why not build a Pickleball court in your own backyard?

Trade your lawn for a pickleball court? Why not!

Let's talk about how converting part of your grassy yard into a Pickleball court not only allows you to enjoy the sport anytime, but also has the benefit of reducing yard maintenance, saving water, and potentially increasing the value of your property.

  1. Less Maintenance: Grass lawns require a significant amount of care - mowing, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, the list goes on. By converting a portion of your lawn into a Pickleball court, you're saving yourself time and money. The court surface, whether it's concrete, asphalt, or a modular sports surface, requires less frequent and less intense upkeep compared to a traditional lawn.

  2. Water Conservation: A lush, green lawn is undoubtedly beautiful, but it can consume an alarming amount of water, especially during the warmer months. A Pickleball court, on the other hand, requires no watering. In times of increasing environmental consciousness, reducing our water usage is a responsible choice we can make.

  3. Increased Property Value: An at-home Pickleball court could potentially increase the value of your property. Recreational amenities are an attractive feature for many home buyers, especially those with a sporty streak. It sets your property apart and adds a unique selling point.

Now, if you're ready to take the plunge, there are a few considerations before you start tearing up your turf:

  • Space: Officially, a Pickleball court measures 20x44 feet for both singles and doubles play. However, you should also factor in extra space around the court for player movement and safety. If space is a constraint, a scaled-down court could still work for fun, recreational play.

  • Surface: The court surface should be flat and even for safe play. While concrete or asphalt are common choices, you might also consider modular sports flooring, which can be easier on the joints and provide better ball bounce.

  • Orientation: The court should ideally be oriented north-south to avoid sun glare during morning and evening play.

  • Equipment: Besides the court, you will need a net, Pickleball paddles, and balls.

  • Local Rules and Regulations: Check with your local homeowners association or town council about rules and permits for building a court.

Backyard sports courts can add value

Having your very own Pickleball court can be a game-changer. It allows you to play whenever you want, invite friends over for tournaments, and spend quality time with your family. So, if you find yourself with a stretch of green that requires more work than it’s worth, why not trade it for a Pickleball court? It’s time to serve up some fun right in your backyard!

Stay tuned for more Pickleball talk. Until then, keep pickling, and remember, it's more than just a game, it's a lifestyle!

Happy Pickling,
